Becoming the Author of Your Own Story
Meaning can be and is created, giving immense power to the narrative you overlay on your life and where and what sort of meaning you assign to events you experience. And with this power comes co-creator level responsibility.
On one hand, we’re carried along by a story we can’t control because we ARE the story. Alan Watts mused that the universe is not a thing but a happening, and it’s certain that whatever is happening is happening through us and orchestrated at a level beyond individual limits. At the same time, we’ve been gifted a flexible consciousness that at its most expansive is aware of “beyond understanding” and can from that void space create beliefs that help or harm. Free will is if nothing else the human ability to tell a story about THE story.
Main character energy is one thing, but it’s a whole different level to embody the energy of narrator. Here, you’re removed from the action enough to see beyond a sequence of events to the fact that most cohesiveness of plot line lies squarely between the ears. From that vantage, you see how assigned meaning creates more joy or sorrow in your life than some times the action itself. This observation is evidence of our co-creative nature and it is the crossroad at which radical personal responsibility—and freedom—can be chosen.
The stories you tell you about you and your life determine how you feel about your life. They shape your happiness, your perspective, and your experience and often they are impacting your sense of wellbeing much more presciently than what is actually happening, or what has or will happen.
Consciousness expansion is not as a luxury reserved for mystics and philosophers, but a very practical call to action for every single one of us. To seize the opportunity to actively participate in the co-creative happening that is Universe and to wildly embrace the limitlessness of the narrator is to move toward your own self-actualization and that of all mankind.
Is the story you’re weaving about who you are your own? Or is it a recycled tale—someone else’s narrative that you’ve unconsciously carried as it eats away at your freedom? Start to know what you are and are not. Sight saves.
